Motivation Versus Driving Need.
Today, I was thinking about motivation, driving need, and getting things done since I was trying to get myself working after a week off in Hawaii. It is so easy to get lazy when you are off on holidays.
To me, motivation is that thing that you use to get yourself to a point of getting something done. In other words, it is that thing you use to get yourself so you complete that next product, book, or even chore done so it is finished and off your to-do list.
Driving need, on the other hand, is something much more intense. It is that need inside yourself that has you focusing on a goal you want to achieve. For instance, you want to be the next big singer like Pink. You take lessons, get together a band, work every possible gig you can so you get a following and eventually make it.
Driving need is a couple of steps past motivation. I am one of those people who has motivation to get certain things done but I’m lack the driving need to focus as sharply as I need on getting my current project to the point I desire. Yes, I’m working on it but I get distracted by other things so I usually have 4 to 6 things going on at once. I do finish each product but I start another one immediately.
Since I lack a certain amount of driving need, and I know I have several projects in mind, I need to make a list so that I can check each and every item off as I complete them. This way, I can see what I’ve done and what I have left. It makes it easier for me to get things done.
I don’t know if driving need is something you are born with or if you develop it along the way. I do know that without the driving need, I find it easier to take time for myself, take time off if I need it, and not feel guilty about things.
In reality, I believe many of us have motivation but we do not have driving need. We get things to a point where we fill we have reached the place we want to be. It might not be at the top of the heap but it is at a level we feel comfortable. Let me know what you think, I’d love to hear. Have a great day.
