Is This The Right Time To Start A Home Business?
It seems that this is a great year for online stores. Due to the virus and governmental suggestions people not travel for family gatherings, people are relying more on virtual stores for shopping.
At the same time, it seems like one see’s more ads on starting your own business with little to no effort. I ended up attending a session to learn more about a “home business” as a favor to someone.
I sat through the presentation, looked at the products, and decided that it was not a good fit because of living in a small community in the bush of Alaska. The presenter brushed off my concerns with “The internet is wonderful as it allows communication all over the world.” He has never lived up here, so he doesn’t understand the internet is not always reliable, nor is there enough affordable bandwidth for things like zoom meetings.
In addition, I don’t know if there is enough population to support such a business, especially since the products run $50 to $60 per items for a 30 day supply. Furthermore, mail service is shaky at best during the winter. The village finally got several planes worth of mail after going 10 days with none due to extremely high winds.
On the other hand, there are lots of ads out there to help create digital products one can sell via your own site or through other sites. I’ve seen directions for creating such products, for finding the niche where your product would be in demand but I have certain concerns.
I’ve heard accusations of one site where some of the sellers take other people’s material, turn it into a digital lesson, and sell it to make money. I also understand this may be a bit of a gray area because most people who share ideas via a blog do not copyright anything.
Speaking of blogs and such, you can find information on monetizing it so people who follow links and purchase recommended items will make money. Of course a blogger can also sell digital materials, etc. But honestly, I’ve visited some blogs like that and they’ve gotten rather cluttered putting me off.
I just don’t think it’s the right time to start one of these businesses due to the pandemic. So many more people have either lost their jobs or are trying to live on a reduced income and face eviction or losing their house. One of the suggestions is to set up your friends to purchase the product and get them involved in selling it to their friends.
It doesn’t seem right to try to sell to people who are struggling to survive day to day. I do have friends who are still bringing in a full income only because they have been declared “essential personnel” but I have qualms about even selling to them because they face the possibility of being exposed to the virus every working day or coming down with it.
Yes, I do dream of starting my own business but right now, with the economy the way it is, I think I’ll plan, organize, and get ready to launch something virtually in mid to late 2021 when the economy has had a chance to settle down and people have had a chance to go back to work. I also realize, my ethics might make it harder to start a business. When I start my business, it will be the right one for me. Let me know what you think, I’d love to hear. Have a great day.
