He Can’t Escape

I have been following the constantly changing story of Prince Harry, his wife, and the royal family. It is interesting the way it has evolved over the past few weeks and I don’t think it is going to end up the way he pictures.

First of all, I think it was quite rude of him to announce to the world that he and his wife were stepping down from their position within the Royal family before he even discussed it with them. Unfortunately, this decision offended the rest of the family. Yes, the Queen had to agree with his request because he basically said “I’m done” but the whole issue is not going to be resolved without a struggle. The crown is trying to figure out the appropriate titles they should have since it is a brand new situation.

He and his wife claim they want to make it on their own without public funding but it appears he’ll be getting money from his father to help them out. I know of very few adults who decide to head out on their own who are still accepting “allowances” from their parents. Besides, his estate is worth between 35 and 40 million. Why is he getting money from dad if he and his wife are no longer willing to perform royal duties?

In addition, Prince Harry has taken responsibility for being the one to come up with the initial idea because he feels the press attacked his wife but leaving the protection of the Crown isn’t going to stop that. Besides, I find it hard to believe he made the decision since she’s already lined up work as an actress. This means they knew about the decision long enough before the announcement to make contact with the appropriate people.

Prince Harry and his wife disliked being in the public eye as royals. They didn’t like their coverage by the press and even sued papers when they felt they’d been unfairly covered. I guess he thought by heading off to Canada, he’d be free but as he’s found out, he and his wife are still being pursued by the press.

I don’t think he understands that he and his wife are public figures. As public figures, they are going to be watched by the press and the world. They cannot escape public interest and to assume by leaving the United Kingdom, he can leave the press behind is ignorant. He can threaten the press all he wants but they have certain rights.

In addition, I don’t understand how they can fly to Canada on a whim and live there. Most people who want to do that must go through a process to gain residency. Did they set it up ahead of time or did they just do it? I don’t know. The other issue is that if she is going to take acting gigs here and there, will she or they be flying down to the United States for that?

If they do and end up in Hollywood, I guarantee they will not escape the press. Americans are as much in love with following the ups and downs of famous people and they will certainly make note of the Prince and his wife if they attend parties, openings, etc.

As a public figure, he will find it quite difficult to have a “private” life, free from the press. He and his wife will be watched, commented upon, and speculated about. I suggest he get used to it because unless he becomes a hermit, people are going to want to know what they are doing.

Perhaps, Prince Harry and Megan should re-evaluate their goals and create a plan based on the fact they are famous public figures. They may not be able to live their life on their own terms.
