Crazy Spring

I don’t know what has been happening in your area but in this part of Alaska, the weather has totally lost it’s mind. Here it is almost the middle of April and our weather is totally unsettled. I realize you think Alaska is always cold and snowy but I’m down outside of Homer which is more reasonable than further north.

The weather has been this way for a few weeks and it shouldn’t be. It’s been like two or three days of solid snow that melts enough to turn to ice only to be covered with more snow. Then it clears up and is sunny for a couple of days before the cycle begins again.

Most of us have been checking daily weather reports and even they have been changing ever hour or two. In the morning, it might be predicting snow but by lunch it says it's due to turn to rain even though you see thick snow flakes falling from the sky. By dinner, it might predict that the weather should be partly cloudy.

Just today, I woke up to an overcast sky. The weather report said the day was due to be partially cloudy so when I saw it was a bit cloudy outside, I wasn’t worried. As the day progressed, the clouds thickened and the ceiling dropped so nothing flew in or out for several hours.

By lunch, it was switching from snow to rain, sometimes both at once and sometimes it popped back and forth between the two. Throughout the afternoon, the snow thickened until you saw flakes whizzing past the window due to the breeze blowing at the same time. By dinner, the snow quit but the wind persisted.

It is about 8:15 in the evening, and the sun is out peeking through large openings in the clouds. Although the wind is still blowing, I suspect tomorrow is going to be nicer. At least I hope so. The last report indicated that tomorrow is supposed to be mostly sunny but only time will see.

Last year by this time, the snow had completely melted, the weather was nice, and I was able to go walking around the village most every single day. This year, I’ve not been able to do that much walking and I keep hoping. Hoping for sun. Hoping for warmer temperatures. Hoping for clear roads.

I suspect other areas are having the same type of crazy weather. I wonder what is causing it? Climate change? Who knows. Let me know what you think, I’d love to hear. Have a great day.
