Coronavirus Fatigue
If you read the news, you’ll notice that the numbers of people with diagnosed coronavirus are going up and the age group with the most infections has been dropping.
I think this is all happening in part because people are just tired of living under restrictions. They want to go out, socialize with others, and not have to think about the possibility of being exposed.
People want to go out to the beach, to parties, or even visit family members for birthdays or weddings as a way of forgetting or escaping the threat that lies over their heads. When you go to a party, drink, laugh, dance, and just have fun, you are enjoying yourself rather than worrying about the virus.
People are under a certain amount of stress everyday due to the uncertainty of the future, especially if you are classified as an essential worker. The problem is you can be exposed to the virus at work, in school, at the stores, restaurants, or even the movie theaters.
As an adult, you might send your child to school one day and two days later you receive a call telling you that your child was exposed. All the sudden you are quarantined for several days. Case in point, my district just started in-person meetings and one of the villages in the past week has had 10 people test positive. That closed everything down and since one or two were students, the teachers are suddenly under quarantine.
During the depression when people lost their money, their jobs, and their houses, they often attended movies to escape the reality of what they faced. Now, people want to do things they associate with happiness, with fun, with life before so they can escape the hard realities of the time.
Humans can only handle stress for so long before their health starts going down, they become sick, or their mental health begins to suffer. When some people break the rules such as avoiding crowds on the beach, attending a party or other activity, I don’t think they are doing it with premeditated thought but are simply tired of everything and are trying to escape their reality.
I admit, I understand it, especially after being under various dictates for at least 6 months with the possibility of it lasting past Christmas, maybe even into next summer. People reach a breaking point where they say “Damn the consequences” and just do what they want because they can’t handle it anymore.
I hope we are able to get the numbers under control but it may take a while. Let me know what you think, I’d love to hear. Have a great day.
